Shin Yatagai

Shin Yatagai is a Japanese photographer living and working in Tokyo, Japan. Upon graduating from Rikkyo University with a degree in Cultural Anthropology, Yatagai set out on his creative journey. Intrigued by photographers such as Diane Arbus and Sheila Metzner, as well as painters such as Vilhelm Hammershøi and Georgia O’Keeffe, Yatagai draws inspiration from the compelling dimension and depth of oil painting; “The works themselves may look like a natural occurrence, however, I am inspired by oil painting in which every single detail has meaning, the objects, composition, usage of color and perspective.” Yatagai’s empty spaces are filled with spiritual meaning. He believes that through the medium of photography, boundaries between abstraction and figuration dissolve. Yatagai’s lens obscures divisions between the tangible and the imperceptible, ethereal. He invites the viewer to experience the comfort in “not knowing”.
